Housing and Development:
I support low density, well designed, environmentally innovative housing in appropriately zoned “pockets” of North Saanich.
I support a slow-growth approach to housing, not a no-growth approach, but:
Developers must demonstrate their care and consideration for our North Saanich character by providing detailed and innovative attention to architectural design, public spaces, cultural features, social needs and environmental standards which all reflect our unique rural and cultural nature.
Developers need to create a “sense of place” which highlights the unique quality of our community, not just houses.
I have adhered to our Official Community Plan (passed unanimously by Council), recent polls and surveys, and the Regional Growth Strategy regarding major development proposals; I listened to both the development community and concerned residents and strived to create a mutually beneficial slow-growth plan that fits with our rural and agricultural community.

I support secondary suites and other housing options such as clustering, as pilot projects in specific areas.
I support continually working diligently with residents and developers to achieve a sound vision of housing development, such as staggering development over a specific timeline in appropriately zoned “pocket”, locations only.
We need to build human relationships with each other, not political relationships to clarify our future housing vision in North Saanich.
The question is not whether or not we need more housing, but rather the amount of housing and how the developments are designed and planned.
Its common sense that we will need more and various types of housing in the future, but it’s not sensible to build too much too soon.
Careful, well designed planning and development should be driven by Council and the residential community. |
